Long Valley, which accommodates half of local bird species, was spared the fate of a railway cutting across it, but rapid urbanization of the New Territories, shrinking of the local agriculture sector and the lack of proper management may wipe the freshwater wetland formed by paddy fields and abandoned farmlands off the map.

The Conservancy Association is carrying out the “Action Model on Sustainable Development in Long Valley,” which is funded by the Sustainable Development Fund. Taking into consideration of the characteristics of the local neighborhood, economy and ecology, the plan aims to improve the environment thru engaging the community.

The Action Model plan comprises different programmes such as removing Mikania, cleaning the neighborhood and restoration of fung-shui wood. These can enhance the sense of belonging of the community; Modifying traditional farming method, developing eco-tours and green market place can create jobs for the local community; Collecting data on habitat diversity and biodiversity, devising conservation plan, researching on fresh water conservation and providing training for the community can enhance the ecological value of Long Valley.

The two-year plan lasts until March 2007. Up to now we have conducted visits to the local residents and collected data on agricultural practices. The next stage will include promoting the action model to the residents and devising historical and eco tours and others community development programmes with them.

The kick off ceremony was held on 19 June 2005. Officiating guests included Director of Administration Cheung King-yu, Chairman of Sheung Shui District Rural Committee Lau Ying-wo, Chairman of North District Council Li Kwok-fung and District Officer (North District) Wong Hon-ho.
