The Conservancy
Association organized a walk from Shui Long Wo, Saikung to
Shum Chung. More than 20 members of CA and their friends
enjoyed the walk as well as the interesting explanation of
various plants given by our director Billy Hau. Ormosia
emarginata, a kind of red beans, and Strychnos
angustiflora, a kind of high poisonous fruit to human beings
but not to bats, could be seen along the road. |

| Although Sai Kung
is dubbed the "Back Garden of Hong Kong", its ecology and
rural character is under threat. Situated next to Three
Fathoms Cove, there will be a large scale development
project in Shap Sze Heung: over 5 000 apartment unit will be
built. To most Hong Kong people, the place is part of Sai
Kung; to developers, however, it is part of Ma On Shan and
should be developed into a residential area. |

Shum Chung is
selected by the Administration as one of the twelve priority
sites for enhanced conservation. However, as early as 1995 a
developer began to buy up land there. The site was
lent to an NGO as an organic farming center from 1996 to
1998 and a dam was built then and kill off the mangrove
forest. In 1999 large pieces of wetland were filled and
turned into a golf course. |

Developers could
practically do what they want in places without planning
control such as Shum Chung. Haliaeetus leucogaster
and Macropodus hongkongensis can still be
spotted there and further degradation of the site should be
avoided. CA urged the Administration to implement planning
control over the site as soon as possible. |
