Building Green Estates (Phase IV) - Flower Bed Design Competition Prize-giving Ceremony

Every year the “Building Green Estates” programme ends with the Flower Bed Design Competition, and this year is of no exception. The ten participating estates spared no efforts in the competition. Staff of estate office, members of Estate Management Advisory Committees and our Green Ambassadors worked in hands to take care of every detail— from seedling nurture to flower bed design. They soundly showed their sense of belongings to the estates they are living in. To applaud the accomplishment of their hard work, CA organised the Flower Bed Design Competition Prize-giving Ceremony at the Christian Family Service Centre on 8 May. In the meantime, certificates of appreciation were presented to the fellow Green Ambassadors. We were honoured to have the Deputy Director of Housing (Development and Construction) Ms. Ada FUNG, JP, as our officiating guest and the outstanding Green Ambassadors to share their experience during the programme.

Bringing the focus back to the competition, all judges agreed that the Flower Bed of Choi Fai Estate excelled the others after serious and thorough assessments. Their flower bed was situated in the main access of the estate where most of the residents could see, and the team had shown high degree of rapport during the competition. Below is the list of the awarded estates:

Many participants gained their “first experience” in the Flower Bed Design Competition, for example a child who grew flowers, a mother who assisted in moving soil, an estate office manager who applied fertilizers on plants and a chairman of the Mutual Aid Committee who went to buy flowers in the Flower Market. Their devotion led to the great success of the competition this year. Building Green Estates (Phase V) will soon be launched. We will continue to bring different environmental activities to the other ten housing estates. Please stay tuned for our updates.

Resources Conservation Ambassador (RCA) Scheme

The scheme’s last community environmental service experience has finished on 15th May. On that day five RCAs brought the green booth game they designed to Villa Athena, Ma On Shan, to experience environmental education promotion in the community. After a whole day of hard work, the students realised how difficult it is to hold a game booth—they had to show great patience in explaining the game instructions to the residents; they needed to maintain discipline during the game and at the same time convey the hidden green messages of the game. People who lack passion in conservation can hardly do it. On the same day we also set up a booth for exchanging second hand goods. The RCAs were responsible for conducting a survey with the second hand goods donors on their shopping and recycling habits.

The outstanding RCAs will be awarded in a prize-giving ceremony on 10th July (Sat). The list of awardees will soon be released. Please keep an eye on our updates.

The competition is part of the “Green Hong Kong Green” project launched last year by HK Electric and CA. It invited the public to trek Lung Fu Shan Country Park, Aberdeen Country Park, Tai Tam Country Park and their surrounding areas, and submit what they thought would be rare and worth seeing. We received more than 370 nominations, and the top 10 hotspots will be considered for inclusion in future eco-heritage trails on the Island.

One of the competition’s adjudicators, HK Electric Director of Engineering (Planning and Development), Mr. Wan Chi-tin, was fascinated by the uniqueness of the nominated hotspots and felt delighted to share these treasures with Hong Kong residents via this competition and the future eco-heritage routes. Another adjudicator, CA Chairman Mr. Lam Kin-lai, said the quality of the competition is brilliant and the winners showed they have great observation skills and deep understanding of nature. He believed that through the educational talks and the learning process during nomination, knowledge of environmental awareness and the passion for nature of the participants were enhanced.

Other judges included Chairperson of the Panel on Environmental Affairs of the Legislative Council, Ms. Audrey Eu; Chairman of Central and Western District Council, Mr. Chan Tak-chor; Chairman of the National Education Association, Dr. Leung Ping-wa; and Senior Country Park Officer of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, Mr. Edmond Lam. They ranked the winning hotspots according to their ecological and historical values, uniqueness and interest as well as accessibility. The 10 winners were selected after scores were combined with results of a public on-line voting. For further information, please browse www.heh.com/greenhkgreen.

Ecotours in Kowloon and N.T.

Over 60 nature lovers have been receiving intensive trainings to prepare themselves as eco-guides for the Eco-tours in Kowloon and N.T.

The future eco-guides of the Eco-tours in Kowloon and N.T will showcase the natural beauty and heritage of TST and Kam Tin, illustrating their importance and changes as the origins of development of Kowloon and N.T respectively. Eco-guides with diverse backgrounds have been receiving a series of indoor and outdoor trainings, along with mock tours, practical tests and exams. Knowing that these will strengthen their knowledge of the ecology and heritage of the area, the eco-guides were seizing every chance to ask questions throughout the trainings.

A participant is explaining special features of a tree during the mock tour. Others listen carefully to learn and give advice.

After graduation in July 2010, they will be ready to lead the public to enjoy the beauty of TST and Kam Tin. Focusing on the ecology, heritage and development of the areas, the guides will lead a total of 48 tours starting from 5th September 2010. Basic information of the eco-tours are as follows:
