Building Green Estate 09/10 - Flower Bed Design Competition

1,800 flower seedlings were distributed to the residents of all participating estates to initiate the Flower Bed Design Competition for 2010.  Those who adopted the seedlings will take care of the plants for a month, and they will be used to establish a newly designed flower bed for display as well as the competition.  Each design will be rated upon their aesthetic value, overall participation of the local residents, location selection and the overall greening effect of the flower bed.  The judging period is scheduled on 9-10th April and the winning designs will be announced at the award ceremony on 8th May.

Energy Saving @ Elderly Homes

At an earlier time we successfully obtained funding from the Environment and Conservation Fund to operate an energy saving programme called “Energy Saving @ Elderly Homes” which aims to raise the energy efficiency of the elderly homes. We will carry out energy audits and education services for 7 elderly homes in the Yau Tsim Mong District. Apart from those, we will also replace certain existing appliances with suitable energy saving devices. We have appointed several members of the CA Energy Committee as our consulting experts. In the coming few weeks, they will pay visits to the elderly homes to assist the management boards to establish frameworks for energy saving practices.

Yau Tsim Mong Waste Source Separation Programme

The “Yau Tsim Mong Waste Source Separation Programme” 2009-2010 is reaching its final stage. All the installations will be finished in March.

The programme is funded by the Yau Tsim Mong District Council and it finances four buildings in the district (Ki Lung Building, Austin Mansion, Tai Ying Building and Ming Fong Building) to purchase separated waste collection facilities on different floors. In the Chinese New Year, we had already conducted site visits at the buildings and designed recycle bins that tailor to their building structures and residents’ habits. We also posted educational posters in the buildings to help residents locate the recycle bins and understand the kinds of waste to be collected. We hope that can increase the recycle bins’ usage and the residents’ awareness of environmental care.
