“Resources Conservation Ambassador Scheme” — Housing Estate Resources Collection Day & Used Clothes Collection Plant Visit

On 30th January 2010, we appointed seven Resources Conservation Ambassadors (RCAs) to help with the Used Clothes Collection Day at Fok On Garden, Ma On Shan. They were responsible for recording data of used clothes collection, hosting booth games and assisting our promotion work. After nearly a full day of work, they truly experienced the hardship and joy of practicing environmental protection activities in the community, and found out that passion, knowledge and stamina are all indispensible for a successful environmental protection practitioner.

We also arranged a used clothes collection plant visit on 6th February 2010 for the RCAs to have a deeper understanding of the used clothes collection industry. Environmental groups should always keep a “make a difference” attitude in order to cope with the endless challenges! For example, the stealing of used clothes kept worsening last year. We then had to modify the design of collection banks immediately to strengthen their security. It is like a battle of wisdom and power against the burglars.

The RCAs were very interested in the plant’s operation. During the vist, they found that the used clothes the public donated were in good conditions, some even had the price tag attached. It reflects the buying habits of the public have to be improved.

It costs a few weeks to completely sort and treat the hill of clothes behind us.
Mr. Wong, staff member of the collection company is explaining how the collection bank design can prevent burglary.

Building Green Estate 09/10Used Goods Exchange Square in Chinese New Year

Used Goods Exchange Squares were held throughout January and February at all participating estates.  The event was scheduled prior to the “Spring Cleaning” of the Chinese New Year with more than 5,500 being collected and/or exchanged.  A number of EMAC members have shown great support and contribution by hosting different collection locations a week before the event.  As with previous years, most of the items collected were toys followed by books, stationeries and household products.  The program was well-received by the local residents and it also showed events of similar nature could be arranged regularly within their public housing estates.
